Current river levels on the River Mellte and River Sychryd in the Brecon Beacons, South Wales are relatively high and will present some really good, challenging Gorge Walking and Canyoning conditions. Ground water levels are saturated so the waterfalls will be flowing constantly too.
With current water levels the flow force will be quite strong, so weak swimmers will need to be very aware of this. All participants will, as always, need to wear full safety equipment; including helmets, buoyancy aids, wetsuits and good sturdy footwear.
You also need to be fully aware of the rainfall in the area, particularly in the previous 12 - 18 hours as any significant rainfall could cause river levels to rise quite quickly. The increase in levels will last longer than if the ground was dry so you need to factor this in to any river based activities across South Wales.
Saturday is definitely out for any Coasteering activities along the whole of the South Wales coast. There are strong winds and big swell throughout the day, so your only option for Saturday is to head inland and try out some Gorge Walking or Canyoning.
Sunday could see acceptable conditions, particularly in the afternoon as the swell drops down and the wind dies out too. You'll still want to look for some of the more sheltered bays on the South Wales coast, such as Caswell Bay or Ogmore. You will need to ensure you are with experienced guides and wearing full safety equipment; buoyancy aids, helmets, wetsuits and good footwear.
Saturday sees some good swell along the whole of the South Wales coast for the surfers. The main issue will be the wind, so you'll want to head to the more sheltered areas, such as Rest Bay in Porthcawl or Caswell Bay or Oxwich Bay in Swansea. Inexperienced surfers may find the conditions on Saturday a bit too demanding, however the conditions calm down on Sunday, so you may find this is the better day to head out.
This is the busiest time of year for us, with Stag Dos and Hen Parties from across the South Wales regions, including Cardiff, Swansea and Porthcawl joining us for a variety of activities, including Gorge Walking, Canyoning and surfing lessons. These activities are bound to refresh even the most tied of participants and set them up for the nights out in Cardiff or Swansea.
We've also got some scout troops joining us for Beach Days. This will teach the participants team building skills with a range of fun but challenging activities, all taking advantage of the beautiful South Wales coastline and beaches. Raft building, simulated water rescues, beach races and more will make sure everybody leaves well and truly exhausted.
