Current river levels on the River Sychryd (Afon Sychryd) and River Mellte (Afon Mellte) or good to low, however as is always the case, heavy rain can cause that to change very quickly. The land is still quite saturated so waterfall levels should be constant across the weekend. Conditions should be good for both Gorge Walking and Canyoning
We are forecast some rain on Saturday in the Brecon Beacons area which could lead to unexpected flashing on the rivers, causing water levels to rise and the flow force to increase, so it is important to be aware of the rainfall levels on the mountain regions, particularly for the previous 8 - 12 hours.
The swell is looking to be around 2 - 4ft this weekend, but with a gentle offshore wind we could see acceptable Coasteering conditions this weekend in the Swansea area, however areas such as Ogmore-by-Sea may not be safe. You also need to be aware of the tide, with low tide this weekend being between 12:15 on Saturday and 13:05 on Sunday.
It's important that you keep an eye on the swell size as any increase could create unsafe conditions for the event, in which case you may find you have to head inland and do some Gorge Walking or Canyoning.
We could see some great conditions for the surfers among you off the South Wales coast this weekend, with reasonable size swell expected and the light offshore winds helping.
Try and take advantage of the incoming tide for the best surfing and head for some of the protected bays, such as Rest Bay in Porthcawl.
High tide this weekend is 18:10 on Saturday and 19:00 on Sunday with a low tide of 1m and high of 9.7m so there will be a lot of water movement on the incoming and outgoing tides that you will need to be aware of.
Another packed weekend for us, with more stag do's from the Cardiff and Swansea areas heading out to the Brecon Beacons to take on the rivers in some Gorge Walking and Canyoning, some surfing lessons down in Porthcawl for some groups and so long as the conditions allow we'll also be getting some Hen Parties on the Coasteering event in Swansea. Busy Busy!
Be aware of swell size and wind direction / strength, particularly for Coasteering. An increase in the size of swell or wind strength or change of direction could create unsafe conditions. Don't be fooled by the nice weather we've had in South Wales these past few days either when it comes to Gorge Walking or Canyoning as a bout of heavy rain could quickly increase river levels.
If we continue to see the sun that we have over the last few days here in South Wales then you will need to be aware of overheating, particularly if you are wearing thermal protection for when you enter the water. Ensure you have plenty of fluids and somewhere to get out of the sun if required.
